Angelica Kauffman (1741–1807) was a Swiss-born Austrian Neoclassical painter known for her refined portraits and historical scenes. A child prodigy, she mastered multiple languages and artistic disciplines by her teens. She studied in Italy, where she gained acclaim for her classical style and intellectual approach to painting. Kauffman’s talents earned her royal and aristocratic patrons across Europe. In 1768, she became one of only two female founding members of the Royal Academy in London, a rare achievement for a woman in the 18th century. Her works often depicted mythological and allegorical themes, blending idealized beauty with emotional depth. Influenced by artists like Joshua Reynolds and the classical revival, she played a pivotal role in shaping Neoclassical aesthetics. Kauffman spent her later years in Rome, where she remained a respected figure in the art world until her death.
