Friedrich von Amerling (1803–1887) was one of the most celebrated Austrian portrait painters of the 19th century, renowned for his refined style and ability to capture the grace and personality of his sitters. Born in Vienna, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts before traveling extensively to hone his skills. His artistic education took him to Prague, London, Paris, and Rome, where he encountered the works of masters such as Ingres and Lawrence, whose influence shaped his elegant approach to portraiture. Amerling’s breakthrough came when he became court painter to Emperor Francis I of Austria.
