Robert Lewis Reid (1862–1929) was an American painter and muralist celebrated for bringing elegance, light, and decorative beauty to American art at the turn of the twentieth century. Born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, he studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston before continuing his education in Paris at the Académie Julian. His training gave him a strong academic foundation, but his mature work revealed a love of luminous color, graceful figures, and atmospheric harmony. Reid became especially associated with American Impressionism, though his style also reflected the refined decorative sensibility of mural painting. He was admired for scenes filled with sunlight, flowers, and idealized femininity, all rendered with freshness and sophistication. Beyond easel painting, he earned important mural commissions for major public buildings, helping shape the visual identity of civic art in the United States. Reid was also a member of The Ten American Painters, a group that promoted a more modern, painterly direction in American art. His career united academic skill, decorative design, and Impressionist color, securing his place as one of the notable American artists of his era and a distinguished figure in both painting and mural decoration.
