Rupert Bunny was an Australian painter known for his elegant, atmospheric works that bridged academic tradition, Symbolism, and modern decorative art. Born in Melbourne in 1864, he studied at the National Gallery School before moving to Europe, where he trained in London and Paris. Bunny spent much of his career in France, becoming one of the first Australian artists to gain serious recognition in the Parisian art world. His paintings often featured graceful women, mythological themes, music, gardens, and sunlit leisure scenes, reflecting the refinement and sensuality of Belle Époque culture. Though influenced by French academic painting, he developed a distinctive style marked by soft color, lyrical composition, and a dreamlike sense of mood.
