Sonia Delaunay (1885–1979) was a Ukrainian-born French artist celebrated for her pioneering work in abstract art and design. Alongside her husband, Robert Delaunay, she co-founded the Orphism art movement, characterized by strong colors and geometric shapes. Her artistic career spanned painting, textile design, fashion, and stage sets, making her a dynamic force in the early 20th-century avant-garde. Delaunay’s work fused modernist abstraction with a lyrical sense of movement and rhythm. She broke barriers as one of the few female artists to achieve significant recognition during her time, even becoming the first living female artist to have a retrospective at the Louvre. Sonia’s designs extended beyond canvas to book illustrations, clothing, and interior design, demonstrating her belief in the integration of art into everyday life. Her vivid color contrasts and circular forms inspired generations of artists and designers. She remained artistically active until her death in Paris at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy of bold innovation and visual harmony.
